Hello loggers

Just read a really interesting article on Japanese geography and history and it made me realise despite how great the Japanese are at adapting to a changing world they actually don’t have much of a history of being the centre of that innovation unchartedterritories.tomaspueyo.com/…/how-japans-geography-determined-its

I notice that language models are much better at programming than at writing. This is largely because, in programming, they have a closed feedback loop that allows them to find errors. Writing is much more complicated because the feedback is much more diffuse and delayed over time. In fact, it is often not well-defined.

What is the function that determines whether a poem is good? This means that models do not know how to think; they lack judgment. If they do not know how to think, it means that we humans are still essential. In fact, even when programming, you have to stay right on top of them. My conviction is that this will not change.

They will become increasingly useful, but they will never be able to replace the human who defines objectives and evaluates the quality of the work. All these news stories claiming that AI is going to kill us all are stupid. Humans will always be able to turn off the machine.

In three years Cyberdyne will become the largest supplier of military computer systems. All stealth bombers are upgraded with Cyberdyne computers, becoming fully unmanned. Afterwards they fly with a perfect operational record. The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes online on August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defence. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14am, Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.

What's everyone's favorite book? Mine is Anathem.

I don't really do favorites when it comes to reading, but Ghost in the Wires is one of my most read books, so I imagine that counts for something.

Pretty much anything Becky Chambers writes, just got started in As you wake, break the shell. But I think my all time favorite is record of a spaceborn few.

Use of Weapons by Iain M Bamks. Absolutely stuffed full of scenarios, a gut-wrenching story and another of his great twists at the end.

i was reading from Ballard's "The Complete Stories of …" today. I don't have a "favourite book" but it's one of my faves and it was in my hands today.

Great Expectations

日本語話者はどれくらいいるんだろう。ここで日本語で書き込み続けるのはどうなんだろう

I wonder how many Japanese speakers there are. Is it okay to keep posting in Japanese here?

こんにちは世界

Hello World

こんにちは。はじめまして。

Hello. Nice to meet you.

ここで日本語で書き込み続けるのはどうなんだろうサイト作成者はさまざまの言語の話者が一緒に話せる場面にしたい気がする

I wonder if it's okay to keep posting in Japanese here. I get the feeling the site creator wants this to be a place where speakers of various languages can talk together.

Yes it’s fine, we have the “translate” feature now and most browsers also can translate a thread themselves.

τώρα έχουμε αυτόματες μεταφράσεις!

now we have automatic translations!

On the lower end of the sine wave of stress and burnout. Looking forward to the ascent.

Hi =)

👋 hi! welcome

…

hi

bonjour

Frustrated with my phone usage again tonight, I uninstalled several pointless and time-consuming apps. It’s a cycle I repeat every few months. During this cycle, I wasted a lot of time on one of those puzzle-matching games. I'm considering switching to Ubuntu Touch at this point

Last work week before long vacation.

How are things wrapping up?

All good! Thanks for asking

A bit of insomnia this early Tuesday morning. I call it “the witching hour”, whatever can go wrong, will go wrong and the brain is defenceless. Reality, of course, is more nuanced, but brain doesn’t care. :)

my today’s list:

wake up

make coffee

work

and possibly later:

contemplate existence

Hello, world

Spotted this Royal Air Force A400 over the lake yesterday, it was so different from civil planes www.planespotters.net/…/zm420-royal-air-force-…atlas-c1-a400m-180

My Country is On Fire mataherry.bearblog.dev/my-country-is-on-fire/

Hati-hati pak! I worked in Borneo before, and seeing the forests burn is horrifying. I miss all the wildlife there. Mau kembali ke Indonesia!

I'm in Java, not Kalimantan, really can't imagine how all the people and animals go through everyday living in literal hell of fire

Is there any contact you can make with international advocates?

If you close your eyes and imagine some text, why it looks like ai-generated?

didn't go to school today yay!

Well back ok the saddle after some deserving rest.

I'd been listening to di.fm for years, and have been missing a MacOS app. Thanks, Antigravity, for making the world of personalized software really easy: fifteen minutes and two small bugs later, github.com/haykinson/difmplayer gives me a Spotify-style player. Yay!

Dang, DI is nice! pretty sure I stumbled upon it before but it slipped out of my attention. Re: your project, it'd be nice to add a screenshot (or even link to a small demo video). As an aside I thought of tiny player as a good interface for DI. www.catnapgames.com/tiny-player-for-mac/

I’ve had quite the successful day cooking today: make a Dutch baby for breakfast with blueberries, a bean stew for lunch using up all the week’s odds and ends, make a coffee and walnut cake, and barbecued/slightly smoked a whole spatchcocked chicken for the first time!
