This is my first note, there are many like it, but this one is mine.

Built a couple lambdas today to send account verification and onboarding drip emails for folks who sign up for my app but don’t make it all the way through the onboarding flow. Pretty cool to be able to quickly bang out self-contained infra for this instead of having to pay some SaaS vendor.

The live tab on the android app is interesting... How does it work? This is a test 🫣

Does it do some kind of polling? Is there some kind of notify like publisher subscriber? 🤔

It’s using the /firehose endpoint. It’s an SSE endpoint publishing everything latest. Though I meant it to be used server-side, since it’s heavily rate-limited — up to 3 conns under the same network, but I can’t control how clients decide to use it so.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Lifted, that’s how clients want to use it then so be it! Should be fine. We’re nowhere near crashing the server from connections.

Hello 👋

Last year I wasn't feeling too good. I turned forty, waited for surgery, and was hurt by my own colleagues. So I dealt with things. Maybe not so well, but to the best of my ability. One of the consequences was that I got a bit heavy. My body changed, and I didn't feel like myself. It was a problem for future me. So now I am here with this little belly of mine. We're not enemies, but I decided it's time to part ways. So I count calories. Maybe not so well, but to the best of my ability.

Almost back to baseline now, after a few months. trigger warning, eating disorders: I sometimes forget to log what I eat in my app of course, but what is perhaps slightly nore disturbing is the fact that I sometimes log stuff and then forget to actually eat them. Some sort of Baudrillardian simulacrum of eating.

We almost had one, but stopped after the main setup but before signing on. Wasn't convinced of the value. Seemed like they were just doing portfolio reallocation for a pretty penny. What are you experiencing?

Had one for ~8 years. Talked to them maybe 10 times, and they only ever did basic indexing w some tax loss harvesting. We should have just self managed.

Installed Hermes Desktop and starting to build out my team of bots. My experience with Hermes so far has been great: it keeps surprising me by being what i need it to be ... but I'll reserve a final judgement until after a proper period of use.

Using Linux hasn't really been fun lately, idk. Nobara, despite building on fedora breaks a lot, but overall the whole ecosystem is so damn inconsistent and fragmented. Not sure if I have gotten more sensitive to this over the years but all I want is a system that "just works" and feels good 😔

I had a great run with Mint for years. I was as boring as it gets. I got a new laptop recently and decided to try OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. I am really enjoying it, but it is a bit too recent for me to swear by it.

Found some coffee at TJ Maxx (american discount store) -- not a big discount but still fun.

I've been building a Markdown variant called Zd that's focused on extensibility and simplicity. I'm curious what you would change about Markdown if you were designing it from scratch, what challenges you face as a user, or what you wish were easier to do when incorporating Markdown into your own projects.

Yeah, 100%. That is completely something I am punting on currently. It would be easy to just copy over the solution from (extensions to) Markdown, but it's hard to entirely narrow in on both what tables ought to do and how to make them do it. If you had a magic wand, what would you have them be more like?

Microsoft Word Online (web version) is horrible.

It was the only way to reproduce the authentic horrible experience of the offline version.

I never used the online version, but the last time I used the offline version it already was a horrible experience. This was about 5 years ago, before I had moved entirely to Linux. It was so bad I downloaded a pirated version of some old MS Office 2007 Blue Edition to have something acceptable. I unironically prefer Libre Office.

Putting a slide deck together (outside of work), despite agreeing with Tufte on this matter. I’ll also create a handout that tells the story better than the slides and deliver that, too, but was asked to produce a slide deck, and I think that’s part of the “effort theater.” Using Beamer for the slides, but not a theme that looks like Beamer because humans have eyes.

This feels right to me. Or, if not right, then one of the safest strategies to remain employable as a software engineer.

Makes sense to me, though I think one important (IMO) aspect of this evolutionary role is incurring liabilities. Yes, software can be created by a wider audience, but when things go awry, would they have the aptitude or contingencies in place to recover and take responsibility?

Agreed. I think the AI hype underestimates the human factor in keeping medium-to-large organizations running.
