Putting a slide deck together (outside of work), despite agreeing with Tufte on this matter. I’ll also create a handout that tells the story better than the slides and deliver that, too, but was asked to produce a slide deck, and I think that’s part of the “effort theater.” Using #latexnotesfollow Beamer for the slides, but not a theme that looks like Beamer because humans have eyes.

I find myself building bespoke tooling for my own #swdevnotesfollow and #ainotesfollow workflows these days, not only because of the obvious reason of software being so much cheaper to build, but also because there are SO MANY options for solving any given problem that it feels impossible to evaluate all of them. If it's not a crucial piece of tech for a work problem then it often feels like paving my own way is both cheaper mentally (kind of amazing that's true these days) and probably a better fit.

"Sharing economy" once meant something. You'd Uber someone B→C when already driving A→B→C→D; you'd AirBNB your home when vacationing and stay at someone else's home who was doing the same. No driving just for Uber; no houses just for AirBNB. I fear this history will be forgotten.

I've been on a kick lately of trying to visualize the oscillating clock, and ultimately the effectively arbitrarily complex activity of a computer processor, as modern refinements of the line shaft factory of the 19th century. Of compute as being not much more than profoundly refined "work" delivered by the electrical grid into marvelously complex machines. Does that, as a metaphor at least, feel as important to you as it has to me of late? We spend so much time in a world abstracted.

(Opinion) People don’t like generative AI because it made the {insert creativity} too easy. Saw the HN post on ‘AI music banned from top 40 chart in Australia’ and people had very strong opinions in both directions. The hot take: If you’re ok with someone’s creativity being outsourced to others, then you should be ok with AI doing the same. If “AI made this and I call it mine” is bad but “someone overseas on fivver made this and I call it mine” and it’s suddenly ok, time to self reflect.

Job I was hoping for gave me the "we found another applicant" treatment. I don't begrudge them for that, since I know I had a 'less than adequate initial coding interview. But still, it stings and sucks. Hopefully my other interviews yield better results...

Been working on an old mastodon hosting project I tried to start a few years ago, with a focus on privacy. This is the first big project I've tried to come back to with the help of coding agents and find it invigorating, and gives me the confidence to actually finish the project. Who knows if it will ever make a dollar, but it sure is fun to watch my ideas come to life.

Anyone here using NixOS? How long did it take for you to learn it and completely set it up? My current distro is Arch (btw)

I am trying to wrap my head around Traefik (which I have never used; have only used Caddy for most of my needs) to plan a migration for things I now run on "bare metal” to containers, and then use Traefik as entry point. If you know some good guides, send the link my way, please.
