I have been a mod and even admin of several small online spaces, and I don't even see the appeal of going power-hungry and unjust when in those positions. I can theorize about it, but it remains wildly unintuitive. Avoiding being a pain isn't the hardest thing ever either: rely on the rules as written, hedge your judgements, rely on facts rather than vibes, consider how things would appear if you were wrong.
