Writing. I want to do it, very badly. I just don't want to be bad at it. You have to be bad at it in order to get good at it. But... Catch 22 isn't it?

Look at this way. You’re already so far along in your journey that you know what bad looks like. If you know what you did is not ideal, you can improve. Better to be a bad writer with humility than a bad writer who thinks themself great.

What motivates you to do it so badly? Can you find ways to explore that while only gently experiencing the self-judgemental bits?

There's a writing exercise called "burn the internal editor" which asks you to just write without lifting your pen for 15 minutes. It punishes you a little for stopping, reviewing, judging. Also, the end result is invariably "bad". The constraints basically force it. And that can feel nice, since it's not your fault.

Interesting…

I think I want it because everyone says it’s the gateway to improve one’s ability to think.

That makes sense. What do you do today when you're trying to think through a difficult problem?

I bounce off it and go to some other difficult problem...which I bounce off...and so on, and so on... Eventually I fire up an LLM.

Ah, yeah, totally. I also find myself falling into that at times these days. Been taking to finding places without WiFi lately.

maybe being bad at it should be the goal. being good would mean masking your truth and filtering your reality.

Very interesting way to look at it, thank you.

I used to write a lot. I had a permanent tab on Sublime Text constantly open where I would put all of my thoughts into. After switching editors I sort of stopped doing that. I want to get back into that habit, perhaps textlog is an opportunity to do so. Of course I was bad at it but it didn’t matter. Not until I articulated a thought into text it became concrete, and then I could analyze its structure and meaning. Nonsense mostly and delusions, if someone reads them. But they made sense to me.

write. and be honest about your own skills. humble yourself, and just keep doing it. you will improve, and its going to feel good in a whole other way than all those things you seem naturally good at. this was my journey with dance, i started late. its gotten me a healthier relationship with myself and the standards i set for myself. if you just want to be good at writing, but dont write, you dont want to write.

Who are you writing for? If for yourself, who cares - write. Do it in a place/tool that allows you to edit/rewrite some parts. In the future you can re-clarify, or if you get better, you can improve them. Focus on what you enjoy to write and write away.

I think reading helps quite a bit, especially writing about what you’ve read, even to yourself, just so you can go through the process of having to explain something that you’re only recently familiar with. There’s something about that process that seems to be helpful, at least to me.
profilefollowOld school metallian, hobbyist developer writing things mostly in Rust…mostlyreplied toprofilefollow:
If I can't explain it back perfectly, I tend to avoid even trying. I sort of skip all the questions that come in between, because I can't answer them yet. It's an odd place, my head.

Same. The way I consume information influences how I think. Short form content makes my thinking fragmented without a clear structure. I feel that fragmented thinking won't lead to convincing writing. And I'm trying to regain some of that lost control.
profilefollowOld school metallian, hobbyist developer writing things mostly in Rust…mostlyreplied to🤡profilefollow:
Very interesting! I think something along those lines might be happening for me too. Another aspect, always cooking in the back of my mind, "if you can't explain it well, don't explain it at all."

The fear of being bad at it is the only thing holding you back. I experienced something like that with playing music with others. Perhaps you could learn to lay down your critical brain during the creation process and that good/bad isn't a useful distinction until later when you're editing your work.

Yeah, this is pretty much what I can't do. My critical brain has a lot of power. It's very evolved at this point :/
