What do you mean? There's a real user base for foldable. I'm not one of them, but they did seem to do some interesting things with it.

I've never seen evidence that they've been successful in Androidworld. After ~seven years of attempts, I liked to think we'd accepted them as a gimmick that flopped.

Might be my friend group causes me to have a bias. Two friends absolutely would not go back to non foldable. To them, the ability to have a large screen is vital for work and hobby related reasons.

The same was said when they finally, and late, joined the AI driven assistant/features. This time, though, it is tried and tested technology, so it is in their advantage.

Maybe. I just don't buy it. I've seen no evidence that people actually want foldable phones. More power to Apple for giving it a shot and testing the market. I just lament the opportunity cost, versus them investing in almost anything else instead.

Since when do people need to want something to get it? 😅 The only drawback is the price; rather “hot” for this economy. I still think it will sell well. I am not spending a penny this year, for sure, but others will.

Totally, $2k’s quite up there. I was interested to see what they released today, as I’ve currently got a 15 with a (non-catastrophically) cracked screen and water-intruded camera lenses. But given today’s roster, I’m inclined towards an iPhone 17.

Totally, I'm glad they're at least trying something new (for Apple). It just underscores the general failure of imagination vibes I get from everything in tech nowadays. Most of the industry is breathlessly chasing a 20th century "golden age of scifi" vision of AI. And Apple's over there diligently trying to improve upon other companies' products from five years ago. At least no one's talking about the metaverse anymore.

yea its kind of sad how the design language has all converged to the same phones and laptops. 1990s/2000s tech had so much swag and fun with design, especially japanese brands. i like what nothing does, the uk smartphone brand. at least they have some identity. and yea the metaverse to my mind was just a meme eversince they introduced it, like I know exactly 0 ppl that own a vr headset, and im with the nerds here. just shows zuck is surrounded by yes men
