Anybody here actively working in or has contributed to (in any capacity) conservation (be it flora or fauna)?

You know, as interesting as that sounds, I wouldn't at all know where to begin with something like that. Do you have a suggestion?

I suggest looking around your area first, perhaps there are conservation groups already. Then, select among them which one focuses on native species that are most impactful to your place. 😁

This fruit is rotten. It looks so ripe and juicy but if you bite it you will see: this fruit is rotten.

Anyone from here?

Vagyis attól még, hogy trehány vagyok, még működhetne jobban is az anyagmegmaradás törvénye, mint éppen errefelé, vagyis errefelé pláne működnie kellene, mégsem ezt teszi.

So even though I'm clumsy, the law of conservation of matter could still work better than it does here, or rather, it shouldn't work here, but it doesn't.

The idea "social media" rotaion is Bear Blog, Mastodon and textlog.

I've never used the other two!

Cool idea congratulation's on the hope it picks up steam

I was contemplating pwc372, p2 and came up with “- 1+&/-/'(&'(?x)=x)@0 -1” (goal). Conceptually I like it, but maybe it can be simplified further?

Is open source dead? Everyone has the power now to make their own stacks of things. The people aspect of open source is dead or dying. I don't think the bunny is going back in the box.

One nice thing about Open Source (at least for me) is different people doing the same thing in different ways and one of those happen to suit my taste perfectly. And in many cases, I won't be able to come with it myself even with Super Intelligence.

Evgeny Morozov has pointed out that using ai through chat interfaces is based on an individualised and privatised model, which (heavily paraphrased) is inherently anti-social. With an extra layer now of people making small personalised tools, do bigger things still need teams of people who know what they’re doing? FWIW I’d like to see more sharing of vibe coded tools instead of everyone making their own more less the same ones. Mine are here: pauladams.neocities.org

I don't think so. I have been using more open source software than ever before. You may argue that with LLMs I have the power to make my own stack of things, but this doesn't eliminate that I still need knowledge to properly steer an LLM to create something worthwhile. If I have no knowledge of what I intend to build, the best thing the LLM will generate is a half-assed copy of something that already exists. Which is what we have been drowning in the past couple of years.

AI can be a superpower in the hands of someone knowledgeable. That makes the people aspect of open source more important, not less. If you offload your curiosity and desire to learn to AI, you will be a slave to it's limitations instead of being a master of its capabilities.

Of course not. I think it is much more relevant to ask "Is closed source dead?". Anyone can now replace a proprietary program with a vibeslopped alternative which might suit them just as well. It will have the same level of trust (ie. none) and none of the other drawbacks.

What's everyone's favorite book? Mine is Anathem.

I don't really do favorites when it comes to reading, but Ghost in the Wires is one of my most read books, so I imagine that counts for something.

Pretty much anything Becky Chambers writes, just got started in As you wake, break the shell. But I think my all time favorite is record of a spaceborn few.

Use of Weapons by Iain M Bamks. Absolutely stuffed full of scenarios, a gut-wrenching story and another of his great twists at the end.

i was reading from Ballard's "The Complete Stories of …" today. I don't have a "favourite book" but it's one of my faves and it was in my hands today.

Great Expectations

Things I'm enjoying lately: Vampire Survivors + Diablo IV Alien + Dune ambiance Howling Dark book 2 of Sun Eater great TV

a Gemma 4 a Google tulajdona, nem tárol más adatot, csak amiről a gépen fogom a Rezső nevű OpenClaw ügynököt kérdezgetni, helyileg azt sem itt tartja, hanem a felhőnek csúfolt infrastruktúrában, ami legvalószínűbben valamelyik brazíliai esőerdőben foglal helyet vagy Finnországban

Gemma 4 is owned by Google, it doesn't store any other data, except what I'll ask the OpenClaw agent named Rezső about on the machine, it doesn't keep it locally either, but in the infrastructure mocked as the cloud, which is most likely located in a Brazilian rainforest or in Finland

What is your favorite way to brew?

Cold brew in the fridge for 24 hours. Gets a very smooth product.

Brikka. Someone on HN mentioned it as great design. I looked it up and bought it after a while. It's been such a delight. Even the occasional brew gone wrong adds to the experience. v60 is also nice when I need it to slow down or be the experience a bit meditative. But Chinese tea is the best for that.

AeroPress, though my deafault is an Americano from our espresso machine. Unfortunately, we lose the nuances from each bean.

…

French press or pourover v60

Cafetière.

Installed Hermes Desktop and starting to build out my team of bots. My experience with Hermes so far has been great: it keeps surprising me by being what i need it to be ... but I'll reserve a final judgement until after a proper period of use.

last time i checked cbd was just not psychoactive at all no?

It doesn’t have the high but it will make you more alert, kind of like tea or coffee.

I just took a look on it yesterday and seems like the stimulant effect is there, so seems like at this point there are mix results on if it actually helps with anxiety and sleep issues. For me personally seems to work just fine but Im not 100% sure how much does it actually does something for me or is just a placebo effect. My thinking is that if I do it from time to time, I can let my body get use to the feeling of a sleep schedule without create dependency on external melatonin dosis or CBD.
