I hate crawlers that donโt advertise theyโre crawlers. โn badly written. They donโt respect the canonical URLs so they keep getting themselves into a loop instead of actually crawling the site properly. They make the logs really hard to read. Canโt block them theyโre distributed.

I am curious what an actual solution to this problem could be. Everything I've read about it feels like a bandaid โ from robots.txt to cloudflare turnstile โ there has to be a better way!
It would require permaban on IPs which would require permalogging of IPs in order to track them, and we are currently obfuscating them before hitting the DB with daily rotating salt so an anonymous user canโt be tracked. So weโd have to give up privacy/security :/

I've been on a kick lately of trying to visualize the oscillating clock, and ultimately the effectively arbitrarily complex activity of a computer processor, as modern refinements of the line shaft factory of the 19th century. Of compute as being not much more than profoundly refined "work" delivered by the electrical grid into marvelously complex machines.
Does that, as a metaphor at least, feel as important to you as it has to me of late? We spend so much time in a world abstracted.

Been working on an old mastodon hosting project I tried to start a few years ago, with a focus on privacy. This is the first big project I've tried to come back to with the help of coding agents and find it invigorating, and gives me the confidence to actually finish the project. I think the in-terminal multiplexers have their place - e.g. if you need to access from mobile (no WezTerm there) or on machines where you simply don't want to install WezTerm for some reason. WezTermrm could probably eliminate that last one by packaging just the mux server.
