When I sit with curious people, I build a lot of curiosity. And inspiration.

NIH syndrome? I am guilty of it too. I love implementing things from scratch, you learn a lot by doing so and you get to own the codebase end-to-end, so no surprises and fighting around others’ choices. It can get exhausting too though, in the end I succumb to using off-the-shelf components because my primary goals move at a higher level.

I don't see much point in trying to build software at a "higher level", like whole products and services. I'm going to go down low and train myself on the fundamentals. Hopefully in time I'll be able to contribute to the foundational bits. You're right, it does get exhausting. At some point you just want to rebuild everything, which is not possible.

I'm going to go down low and train myself on the fundamentals. When I wrote an HTTP sever (albeit HTTP/1.1), I learned how primitive the HTTP protocol its magic became a skill. It is freeing understanding how things work and allows me to choose where to spend time with more intention.

A thing I've been doing lately is trying to come to the same conclusions others have without looking their the direct techniques and code. Developed a Vinboard (my pinboard.in clone) shortcut, works really well. On iOS it lives in Share menu, on macOS in the Dock. Click sends the current browser page (Safari, Chrome, Zed, Firefox) for bookmarking. On the server side Jev decides tags from 60 least recently used; and archival opens a real Chrome to save the whole page for posterity. Unlimited API limits and direct requests to the database. Pinboard charges for much less functionality $22/year.

I'm looking for a way to manage my bookmarks easily on desktop and Android. Anyone have any experience with software like that? It'd be nice to be able to tag or categorize pages, and maybe to keep local mirrors for certain ones. I'm open to self-hosting. Thanks for reading!

I've stopped managing bookmarks after del.icio.us died - now i just hit the browser star but they seem to disappear and never visit them again, apart from the most recent. The situation sucks really. I'm also interested in a good solution.
