i just got home from the day trip to Zaragoza, it's late and I got to wake up early tomorrow (・・;) How am I visibly the most tired, but I'm the youngest? I need more stamina ( ￣▽￣)

Anybody here using mastodon regularly? What instance are you on? I can't decide on where to register 😅

replied to:

I'm using mastodon.social but i think you can look the instances in their site and decide by interest.

replied to:

There's a really good one run by someone in the Netherlands. He forked the software and made a ton of improvements. I was on there six years ago. I wish I could remember the name.

replied to:

Ah! Qoto.org! It looks like it might be gone now though :/

mastodon.social/@pauladamsmas

I decided to use mstdn.social/@zbr - I like that’s it’s not too crowded and has a 500 word limit.

So we can't use em dash anymore — lest we anger the mob. Truth be told though, English teachers have always discouraged em dash overuse because it is a subtle art and very easy to get wrong.

replied to:

The funny thing is that in the UK, we don't really use the em dash anyway. We use the hyphen (I guess en dash?) with a space each side. So the em dash has always looked a bit odd to us... 😊

replied to:

There are dashes (-), as well as en dashes (–), and there are em dashes (—), not to miss the mighty center dot (•) that looks like a perky boob when surrounded by brackets haha

replied to:

Just get and read Chicago Manual of Style, or Oxford Style Manual if you so prefer, and you’re all set to use the various dash’es (and many other things).

replied to:

There’s other dashes to pick if you want to steer clear of the almighty em dash!

The anti-slop mob is tiresome. With a careful and appropiate use of ai it is possible to make a lot of interesting stuff. And I hate even more when the mob "profs" that the text is ai using those ai detectros that can't detect ai.

Just read a really interesting article on Japanese geography and history and it made me realise despite how great the Japanese are at adapting to a changing world they actually don’t have much of a history of being the centre of that innovation unchartedterritories.tomaspueyo.com/…/how-japans-geography-determined-its

I'd been listening to di.fm for years, and have been missing a MacOS app. Thanks, Antigravity, for making the world of personalized software really easy: fifteen minutes and two small bugs later, github.com/haykinson/difmplayer gives me a Spotify-style player. Yay!

replied to:

Dang, DI is nice! pretty sure I stumbled upon it before but it slipped out of my attention. Re: your project, it'd be nice to add a screenshot (or even link to a small demo video). As an aside I thought of tiny player as a good interface for DI. www.catnapgames.com/tiny-player-for-mac/

NIH syndrome? I am guilty of it too. I love implementing things from scratch, you learn a lot by doing so and you get to own the codebase end-to-end, so no surprises and fighting around others’ choices. It can get exhausting too though, in the end I succumb to using off-the-shelf components because my primary goals move at a higher level.

replied to:

I don't see much point in trying to build software at a "higher level", like whole products and services. I'm going to go down low and train myself on the fundamentals. Hopefully in time I'll be able to contribute to the foundational bits. You're right, it does get exhausting. At some point you just want to rebuild everything, which is not possible.

replied to:

I'm going to go down low and train myself on the fundamentals. When I wrote an HTTP sever (albeit HTTP/1.1), I learned how primitive the HTTP protocol its magic became a skill. It is freeing understanding how things work and allows me to choose where to spend time with more intention.
