some people do absolutely improve their work output (either amount or quality) with AI, but most people just resign all their critical thinking to the black box. if you cannot function at YOUR WORKPLACE without ai, chances are that, 99% of the time, you never was supposed to work there in the first place.

Is this true? Sometimes, AI allows for socratic thinking, this is, the conversation with the machine allows the thinker to go further as the AI thorws ideas to the conversation. Many times, the AI reasoning is not good enough, but like a friend that says a funny think that sparks an idea, the AI can help our brain to see other possible paths. The AI doesn't need to be right to be helpful

that's only true if a) that "rubber ducky" entity is not leading the line of thinking down the wrong path, and b) the human thinker is actually doing the critical thinking, and not the machine. The latter is where my criticism of unbridled AI use is in this case, wherein the human becomes the rubber ducky instead of the other way around.

A problem I perceive is usage of AI to launder ignorance. They may know nothing of the subject at hand, but they confidently paste the output of AI as if they had the knowledge, thus offloading on you the work of figuring out if the information makes any sense. In many ways it emboldened the incompetent.

Is the IDE dead?

Seems to be reinvented into something else.

What is the exact definition of an IDE? JetBrain's products are as good as ever, in my opinion, but people have definitely made non-IDEs into big, hulking behemoths with tons of plugins. If anything, maybe "just an editor" is dead?

I think they mean the transition that all IDE's are making towards an agentic interface, hiding the code completely as humans will not have to interact with it since the AI will be doing a better job at everything, even auditing it.

The seductive power of using to just-get-it-done is very strong. One can't hurry quality. One can iterate quickly though in the hope of arriving somewhere good.

I direct a plan, then break it into phases, and each phase into sections with tasks and sub-tasks. The plan outlines all phases, but only write tasks one phase at a time, since things change. That's how I've been working with for the past few months to a year. It has been amazingly consistently high quality. just-get-it-done is for the rough sketch or proof of concepts (I do those too and a lot of them) but never for a quality product.

I notice that language models are much better at programming than at writing. This is largely because, in programming, they have a closed feedback loop that allows them to find errors. Writing is much more complicated because the feedback is much more diffuse and delayed over time. In fact, it is often not well-defined.

What is the function that determines whether a poem is good? This means that models do not know how to think; they lack judgment. If they do not know how to think, it means that we humans are still essential. In fact, even when programming, you have to stay right on top of them. My conviction is that this will not change.

They will become increasingly useful, but they will never be able to replace the human who defines objectives and evaluates the quality of the work. All these news stories claiming that AI is going to kill us all are stupid. Humans will always be able to turn off the machine.

The job market feels like it's been run over by a truck. What's the play here? Anything automated/streamlined (job platforms, LinkedIn, etc.) feels like a dead end. Messaging people, networking and so on seems like the only reasonable way, and that's a hustle all on its own.

not marketing. yes their jobs positively select for concern about ai, but most people that are actively researching the field are concerned about the current state of safety, pace and incentives. I dont agree with a lot anthropic does, but i do believe the employees take safety seriously and they obviously have a better understanding of it than us. also theres no incentive for someone like coxon to sound alarm bells on twitter for "marketing" reasons, after quitting anthropic

Yes, but some people say that they are pushing for market regulation. They want the state to protect them from the chinese models and, also, to protect the massive investments in Anthropic, OpenaAI, et al. that these companies will never be able to return. This sounds plausible to me too.

Maybe but it would be convenient for them if they were the only ones allowed to train new models. I think that's much more likely what they're interested in.

Maybe someone will find those useful, so I took the time to get it published. Gruntfooot is a footer customization, where you can try new colors/glyphs in real time and also has theme support.

Piflux is a coding workflow. You can steer software development by running commands that issue reasonably general prompts. /plan, /code, /review I created this because I find it very useful to have different models/ perform each of those tasks in isolated sessions. Managing this manually was very much a hassle.
