Super tired today. Must be the fall. Must be the rain. Must be the stretch of 5 meetings back to back the whole work day. Must be everything thatโ€™s on my mind. Tomorrow itโ€™s a new day!

Ouch. Did you contribute in these meetings?

Sure, thatโ€™s what I do. Iโ€™m not sad for it, itโ€™s actually great to be able to put my very small dent in a few things. But exhausting it is nevertheless.

Glad you're still a part of it, it's all performing, really. My meetings were useless. I was the youngest guy there, didn't have much to do but practise my doodling.

It seems this year is when big budget LLM players overtake independent academic mathematicians, in speed at least. The Jacobian conjecture, a lot of Erdos problems, now even the Navier Stokes millenium problem. Solved due to new model releases, all within this summer.

in math it can definitely prove statements that havent been proven before. I dont think thats the big thing though since it also writes sentences nobody has ever written before and in software it can write programs that havent been written before. Its just that the speed and scalability that has overtaken human mathematicians and programmers

Finally watched Project Hail Mary. Easily one of my top 5 favourite films but itโ€™s still not nearly as good as the book โ€” I feel like the cut some pretty important scenes

I loved the book and Iโ€™m always fearful when a movie script is developed and a movie produced, so my relief after I saw the movie was immense. I too feel theyโ€™ve cut-out some bits, but the main thing that a book almost always takes my breath away with is fueling my imagination. A movie would (possibly) never nail that aspect.
profilefollowreplied toprofilefollowI carved wooden spoons and my favourite herb is lemon thyme.:
I just watched it as well. It was fun. There were a number of things that I felt weren't explained well and broke my suspension of disbelief; I haven't read the book, but I found myself really curious whether the book takes the time to justify things more. Obviously, the movie has a lot of pressure to rush to the next "big moment".
profilefollowI carved wooden spoons and my favourite herb is lemon thyme.replied toprofilefollow:
If thereโ€™s one thing Andy Weir canโ€™t be critiqued on then itโ€™s not fully justifying all of the science. I think the film on the other hand can be hard to follow for someone who has neither read the book nor has a scientific background. Itโ€™s just hard to monologue about gravitational forces and relativistic speeds on screen.

The essence of aligning large LLM models is basically to conform to the existing social order. ChatGPT respects China's order, while China's open-source models, although reluctantly, also tolerate the order in the US. Maybe we can build a revisionist SFT dataset.
