I hate crawlers that donโ€™t advertise theyโ€™re crawlers. โ€™n badly written. They donโ€™t respect the canonical URLs so they keep getting themselves into a loop instead of actually crawling the site properly. They make the logs really hard to read. Canโ€™t block them theyโ€™re distributed.

For this particular problem though, I feel like if the crawlers are coming from domestic / residential IP addresses and they lack a distinctive http header or user agent, it is indistinguishable from a denial of service attack and must be treated as such.

It would require permaban on IPs which would require permalogging of IPs in order to track them, and we are currently obfuscating them before hitting the DB with daily rotating salt so an anonymous user canโ€™t be tracked. So weโ€™d have to give up privacy/security :/

But as long as people can still use the site it's OK, right? Seems like the problem is often self-inflicted, either because the site is so bloated that answering even GET-requests is burdensome, or because they're trying to monetize the data and so must block non-paying scrapers.
tech influencers on twitter: god i hate interacting with other people. i love my new bot that does it for me. life is so much better now that im just telling bots what to do and not talking to people. i canโ€™t wait for everyone to be bots!
I'm doing experiments with short attention-span students and code. Starting with python, and, oddly, now working in BASIC. As a C programmer of 40+ years, I find this aesthetically and pedagogically displeasing, but I am delighted to see them getting fully absorbed in writing 130 PRINT "You have been eaten by a bear!" : GOTO 900. Yes there is spaghetti, but it's their spaghetti and they seem to take delight in debugging it. Python will come later. #educationnotesfollow #programmingnotesfollow
I was talking about this with some alumni students, specifically their experience learning python with us a few years earlier (these are college students who are not really using python any more). What it seems to boil down to is that with python you have the feeling that there is this huge forest of solutions to any problem you are having -- but you will never know the whole forest. BASIC feels like you "know" it after a day or two of playing around, evidently.

And yet, homes remain chronically under-managed. Cars have service records. Portfolios have dashboards. Homes have a junk drawer full of manuals and receipts. This leads to problems that degrade a home's value over time. Deferred maintenance snowballs from small issues to emergency repairs costing thousands. Today, I wrote a new Business Continuity Plan, worked with my SRE manager to improve responses to alerts, got a cringe email from HR and have to tell my staff to RTO 3-days a week if not classified as remote. Worked out for my 8th day streak, and cuddled in bed with my girl. Hello World

It didnโ€™t work out, we found competition offering the same service for free so the #ideanotesfollow fell apart. Need to find something else to do as a side project to textlog. ๐Ÿ˜• Thinking of a code editor thatโ€™s focused on the new agentic workflows, so you have it on the side regardless of your agent tools and it monitors the git diff and offers a nice panorama view. Iโ€™ve done an extension for VSCode similar to this idea.
