hello world ~ i'm a web developer from midwest, usa. it's been awhile since i worked on anything. since the i've been working my way up the ladder at a blue-collar job; i was promoted to team lead last week. but as i browse hacker news everyday, my cravings for web development increases.

A credit union wants to get their own data out of a vendor's online system. Vendor wants $160,000. you could split to buckets like alphanumerically and parallelize it if you don't want to wait that long. Probably need to launch a few instances but still cheaper lol.

The slowness is intentional. I wanted to make it look more like a user doing it than a script so it doesn't set off any alarms. I have it waiting from 1 to 3 seconds between clicks to slow it down. :-) So far so good!

I love implementing things from scratch, you learn a lot by doing so and you get to own the codebase end-to-end, so no surprises and fighting around othersโ choices. It can get exhausting too though, in the end I succumb to using off-the-shelf components because my primary goals move at a higher level.

I don't see much point in trying to build software at a "higher level", like whole products and services. I'm going to go down low and train myself on the fundamentals. Hopefully in time I'll be able to contribute to the foundational bits.
You're right, it does get exhausting. At some point you just want to rebuild everything, which is not possible.

When I wrote an HTTP sever (albeit HTTP/1.1), I learned how primitive the HTTP protocol its magic became a skill. It is freeing understanding how things work and allows me to choose where to spend time with more intention.

I feel like I have something to say but at the same time I don't know what to say. How can that be?
I notice that language models are much better at programming than at writing. This is largely because, in programming, they have a closed feedback loop that allows them to find errors. Writing is much more complicated because the feedback is much more diffuse and delayed over time. In fact, it is often not well-defined.
What is the function that determines whether a poem is good? This means that models do not know how to think; they lack judgment. If they do not know how to think, it means that we humans are still essential. In fact, even when programming, you have to stay right on top of them. My conviction is that this will not change.
They will become increasingly useful, but they will never be able to replace the human who defines objectives and evaluates the quality of the work. All these news stories claiming that AI is going to kill us all are stupid. Humans will always be able to turn off the machine.
In three years Cyberdyne will become the largest supplier of military computer systems. All stealth bombers are upgraded with Cyberdyne computers, becoming fully unmanned. Afterwards they fly with a perfect operational record. The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes online on August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defence. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14am, Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug.
