hello all and good morning. i need to go buy coffee

morning! one for me too. a cappuccino please.

The seductive power of using to just-get-it-done is very strong. One can't hurry quality. One can iterate quickly though in the hope of arriving somewhere good.

I direct a plan, then break it into phases, and each phase into sections with tasks and sub-tasks. The plan outlines all phases, but only write tasks one phase at a time, since things change. That's how I've been working with for the past few months to a year. It has been amazingly consistently high quality. just-get-it-done is for the rough sketch or proof of concepts (I do those too and a lot of them) but never for a quality product.

A thing I've been doing lately is trying to come to the same conclusions others have without looking their the direct techniques and code. Last night I tried to figure out why people do vector based retrieval for RAG and ended up running these experiments: n0tls.com/…/2026-09-03-i-think-…rag-with-grep.html I'm still going to do an explore agent.

Here's a follow up from last night: n0tls.com/…/2026-09-05-fine-tuning-…tiny-retriever.html This has been a great way for me to learn in this space. Learning with AI has been such a fun time for me.

I was about to prepare a rewrite cause a personal program was failing but realized I had an incomplete change and was incorrectly identifying an error from valid data. Actually so weird to pick up a project after weeks of not touching it

At a philosophical level, can we have nice things?

I want this expanded and enacted by one of those guys doing Jordan Peterson impersonations :D

replied to:

I think yes, but precisely NOT "at a philosophical level". You can have it only if you get your hands dirty and build it yourself. I think already proved this, just as a close example.

entropy says no

If speaking on a philosophical level, then first we have to ask: what’s “nice” and what’s “to have” 👀

replied to:

If you consider what you have nice, you can have nice things. If your expectations to your surroundings are very very low, you will be amazed with all the nice things you get from people you meet through your day. My personal approach.

I'm not sure the world needs another static site generator, but I made one. get-taxus.org Giving the project some TLC this week, doing some bug squashing. If you want and SSG that doesn't fight you, give it a go.

The world needing one? Never. But you needing one? Always. If you're not using your own SSG, are you even webbing?

So true... I type in a screen I paid for 🤣

This is certainly one of the ways

Hey that's interesting... I have an interest in plain text markup languages and tools and stuff. Feels like an overlap. :)

I’d love to hear also about these workflows. Welcome!

Is open source dead? Everyone has the power now to make their own stacks of things. The people aspect of open source is dead or dying. I don't think the bunny is going back in the box.

One nice thing about Open Source (at least for me) is different people doing the same thing in different ways and one of those happen to suit my taste perfectly. And in many cases, I won't be able to come with it myself even with Super Intelligence.

Evgeny Morozov has pointed out that using ai through chat interfaces is based on an individualised and privatised model, which (heavily paraphrased) is inherently anti-social. With an extra layer now of people making small personalised tools, do bigger things still need teams of people who know what they’re doing? FWIW I’d like to see more sharing of vibe coded tools instead of everyone making their own more less the same ones. Mine are here: pauladams.neocities.org

replied to:

I don't think so. I have been using more open source software than ever before. You may argue that with LLMs I have the power to make my own stack of things, but this doesn't eliminate that I still need knowledge to properly steer an LLM to create something worthwhile. If I have no knowledge of what I intend to build, the best thing the LLM will generate is a half-assed copy of something that already exists. Which is what we have been drowning in the past couple of years.

AI can be a superpower in the hands of someone knowledgeable. That makes the people aspect of open source more important, not less. If you offload your curiosity and desire to learn to AI, you will be a slave to it's limitations instead of being a master of its capabilities.

replied to:

Of course not. I think it is much more relevant to ask "Is closed source dead?". Anyone can now replace a proprietary program with a vibeslopped alternative which might suit them just as well. It will have the same level of trust (ie. none) and none of the other drawbacks.
