I loved the book and Iโ€™m always fearful when a movie script is developed and a movie produced, so my relief after I saw the movie was immense. I too feel theyโ€™ve cut-out some bits, but the main thing that a book almost always takes my breath away with is fueling my imagination. A movie would (possibly) never nail that aspect.

I just watched it as well. It was fun. There were a number of things that I felt weren't explained well and broke my suspension of disbelief; I haven't read the book, but I found myself really curious whether the book takes the time to justify things more. Obviously, the movie has a lot of pressure to rush to the next "big moment".

If thereโ€™s one thing Andy Weir canโ€™t be critiqued on then itโ€™s not fully justifying all of the science. I think the film on the other hand can be hard to follow for someone who has neither read the book nor has a scientific background. Itโ€™s just hard to monologue about gravitational forces and relativistic speeds on screen.

You can steer software development by running commands that issue reasonably general prompts. /plan, /code, /review I created this because I find it very useful to have different models/ perform each of those tasks in isolated sessions. In China, I am practically independent of the government; I don't participate in any activities based on my status, such as formal work or online shopping. Often silence, for me. I could create a (narrow) bell curve of problems where I listen to music. If I'm doing light enough work then I don't tend to listen to music, probably just out of habit - but as I approach problems of a certain complexity then I do prefer music. I just find that complexity band is narrow and past it I need to turn off the music. I would like to widen my music band. My preference is usually ambient - I like Gaussian curve and Hiroshi Yoshimura

For sure. We're well past the point of being able to reasonably claim that the tools have no practical use. But I share the article's skepticism that LLM-based AI will "produce a fully automated drop-in replacement for most knowledge workers". Which it at this point has to in order to justify these companies' stupendous valuations.

Tesla has been overvalued for over a decade with the promise of โ€œfully autonomous carsโ€ and itโ€™s still not losing its value, despite not meeting that (and probably never will, as the computation necessary to achieve it is bounded by physics).

That's a different situation. Tesla's a public company whose valuation is driven by the market, which has the right to be irrational. My understanding is that the AI buildout is financed such that the companies need to turn a profit by ~2030 or else they drown in capital costs.

Or maybe the frontier labs become Tesla-like, if it turns out investors just want to believe in the dream and don't care about financials that don't make economic sense. I just don't see that happening, given current sentiment and the overwhelming unpopularity of AI in the West.
