A thing I've been doing lately is trying to come to the same conclusions others have without looking their the direct techniques and code. Last night I tried to figure out why people do vector based retrieval for RAG and ended up running these experiments: n0tls.com/โฆ/2026-09-03-i-think-โฆrag-with-grep.html
I'm still going to do an explore agent.
Any conversation
Here's a follow up from last night: n0tls.com/โฆ/2026-09-05-fine-tuning-โฆtiny-retriever.html
This has been a great way for me to learn in this space. Learning with AI has been such a fun time for me.

I think reading helps quite a bit, especially writing about what youโve read, even to yourself, just so you can go through the process of having to explain something that youโre only recently familiar with. Thereโs something about that process that seems to be helpful, at least to me.

Same.
The way I consume information influences how I think. Short form content makes my thinking fragmented without a clear structure. I feel that fragmented thinking won't lead to convincing writing. And I'm trying to regain some of that lost control.

The fear of being bad at it is the only thing holding you back. I experienced something like that with playing music with others. What is the exact definition of an IDE? JetBrain's products are as good as ever, in my opinion, but people have definitely made non-IDEs into big, hulking behemoths with tons of plugins. If anything, maybe "just an editor" is dead?
