Who's enjoying #cnotesfollow in 2026? I'm back after ~14 years away (some sporadic once-in-a-while use in there) and I'm finding it better than ever, a smoother development experience and clearer code than pretty much every language out there, except for maybe #odinnotesfollow.
I get paid to write it if you can believe that.
Considering how absolutely barren it seems out there in terms of C jobs versus C++ jobs, I can barely believe it. What do you work on?
Some specialized censors used in automated manufacturing. It's pretty cool, I look forward to coming into the office almost every day. I've worked for a few f500 companies and took a pay cut to come here. A bunch of people from my college robotics club work here too.
That sounds really cool. Above all I really like hearing that someone enjoys their work and likes showing up for it. I've had that feeling on a few contracts and it's great. Looking to get into embedded myself, since it seems that's where you get to have all the fun writing C. :)
#cnotesfollow has been such a pleasure. Havenโ€™t tried Odin, but was using #zignotesfollow for a while, and I just found myself pulled back to C. A minimal sharp tool. Runs anywhere. Can actually write a compiler for it. Short bootstrap chain from hex0. Does anybody care about these things (anymore)?
Support everywhere (in every way) was key to me starting to use C again. It's nice to not have to worry about the language you use being left out somewhere, a non-starter somewhere else and having to mentally translate it to something else (Zig/Odin in a debugger -> C).

Unfortunately no. Just starting it. Got the proof of concept loading a dir with its sub-dirs then rendering on the GPU in textures silky smooth. 1.7mb executable, but will need to level up to SDL and that will double the size I think.

I agree. It is #zilchnotesfollow for now. Will do better next time, but in my defence the text above the text box (when writing a new message, not a reply) says โ€œWhatโ€™s on your mindโ€. :-P

Overvalued, maybe. Extremely valuable, yes, though.
For sure. We're well past the point of being able to reasonably claim that the tools have no practical use. But I share the article's skepticism that LLM-based AI will "produce a fully automated drop-in replacement for most knowledge workers". Which it at this point has to in order to justify these companies' stupendous valuations.
Tomorrow no but there will always be the โ€œhopeโ€ which is enough for the next 20 years before giving up. Which meanwhile would be replacing larger and larger chunks of the workforce so it wonโ€™t really matter, weโ€™ll be adjusting our lives around it as well so we meet in the middle.
Tesla has been overvalued for over a decade with the promise of โ€œfully autonomous carsโ€ and itโ€™s still not losing its value, despite not meeting that (and probably never will, as the computation necessary to achieve it is bounded by physics).
That's a different situation. Tesla's a public company whose valuation is driven by the market, which has the right to be irrational. My understanding is that the AI buildout is financed such that the companies need to turn a profit by ~2030 or else they drown in capital costs.
Or maybe the frontier labs become Tesla-like, if it turns out investors just want to believe in the dream and don't care about financials that don't make economic sense. I just don't see that happening, given current sentiment and the overwhelming unpopularity of AI in the West.
Built a couple lambdas today to send account verification and onboarding drip emails for folks who sign up for my app but donโ€™t make it all the way through the onboarding flow. Pretty cool to be able to quickly bang out self-contained infra for this instead of having to pay some SaaS vendor.

Spent months pair-building a full telecom BSS with an AI. The surprise wasn't the code โ€” it was that the real job became verification. The AI read 450 tokens for every 1 it wrote. Turns out building honestly is mostly re-reading. #opensourcebssnotesfollow

I can't figure out what's leaking on my '73 F250. Shows up slowly at the back of the oil pan. It's pretty clear because I've recently changed fluids and scrubbed the engine. It was definitely brake fluid for a while after it was overfilled but that has evened out. The oil level is steady after when checking every 10 miles or so. Deterministic code generation is fine by me. Quite happy to use templating systems for example. Problems occur when randomness is introduced. If you can avoid that it should be less "icky".
