Is this true? Sometimes, AI allows for socratic thinking, this is, the conversation with the machine allows the thinker to go further as the AI thorws ideas to the conversation. Many times, the AI reasoning is not good enough, but like a friend that says a funny think that sparks an idea, the AI can help our brain to see other possible paths. The AI doesn't need to be right to be helpful

that's only true if a) that "rubber ducky" entity is not leading the line of thinking down the wrong path, and b) the human thinker is actually doing the critical thinking, and not the machine. The latter is where my criticism of unbridled AI use is in this case, wherein the human becomes the rubber ducky instead of the other way around.

Indeed. The AI throws back ideas, but it is the human who must do the heavy lifting. In this regard, the AI is a sort of mirror, it reflects what you send it, showing another side the object. But if the human messages are bad, the AI will respond with bad quality answers.

A problem I perceive is usage of AI to launder ignorance. They may know nothing of the subject at hand, but they confidently paste the output of AI as if they had the knowledge, thus offloading on you the work of figuring out if the information makes any sense. In many ways it emboldened the incompetent.

Today I had a long meeting of many hours, one of those where passive listening is enough for most of the time. I took advantage of the time to implement a two-way synchronization between my calendar and my markdown note system (Emacs Howm). In return, my personal chatbot now has access to my schedule (not just my tasks). I have slightly modified the prompt sent to it by the systemd service that runs it, with the idea of making it more aware of this fact. I have also modified the morning briefing that the chatbot sends me. This briefing contains an analysis of the tasks I have during the day. It will now take into account tasks and schedule, thus helping me to prioritize better.

Així doncs, la idea és planificar millor els meus dies. I think this will help me, because the chatbot is not only aware of the tasks and events I have, it also has access to their context (all the notes), including the personal context (my diary) so it takes into account my emotional state. So, the idea is to plan my days better. And if I don't plan them better, at least delegate many of the small day-to-day decisions to the chatbot so that I can preserve energy for other decisions.

I guess the next step to improve my chatbot is to give it read permission, and only read permission, to email. Especially for those periods when email is piling up and you want someone to quickly tell you if there's anything relevant under the paperwork. An LLM that has access to the context of your work, tasks, and notes should have some ability to tell if an email is relevant or not. But those are figs from another basket and we'll leave them for another day.

I read those posts normally. I always wonder if it would be a bit lame to reply in English, since I typically don't know the original language. For instance, I can't write in Catalan, although I can sort of parse it and understand it without translation. That said, I am not natively an English speaker.

The funny thing is that in the UK, we don't really use the em dash anyway. We use the hyphen (I guess en dash?) with a space each side. So the em dash has always looked a bit odd to us... 😊

All the tools I vibecode. I use them almost every day. Spotlight on macOS broke one day and didn’t recover. Now I have my own personal version. I don’t trust any of the Password management software, so - personal version. Entertainment software sucks and ended up asking for too much money… Fetching videos from the internet was cumbersome - personal version. I’m not supposed to take that literally of course, but I don’t think software has such an important role in our lives, for most of us. Water, food, air. Those you can’t live without. When it comes to software, I spend most of my workdays in the shell (vim, git, grep,…) and if $place allows in mutt+weechat (although that’s mostly outlook and teams). Nothing particularly new!

not marketing. yes their jobs positively select for concern about ai, but most people that are actively researching the field are concerned about the current state of safety, pace and incentives. I dont agree with a lot anthropic does, but i do believe the employees take safety seriously and they obviously have a better understanding of it than us. also theres no incentive for someone like coxon to sound alarm bells on twitter for "marketing" reasons, after quitting anthropic

Yes, but some people say that they are pushing for market regulation. They want the state to protect them from the chinese models and, also, to protect the massive investments in Anthropic, OpenaAI, et al. that these companies will never be able to return. This sounds plausible to me too.
