Support everywhere (in every way) was key to me starting to use C again. It's nice to not have to worry about the language you use being left out somewhere, a non-starter somewhere else and having to mentally translate it to something else (Zig/Odin in a debugger -> C).

I loved the book and Iโ€™m always fearful when a movie script is developed and a movie produced, so my relief after I saw the movie was immense. I too feel theyโ€™ve cut-out some bits, but the main thing that a book almost always takes my breath away with is fueling my imagination. A movie would (possibly) never nail that aspect.

I just watched it as well. It was fun. There were a number of things that I felt weren't explained well and broke my suspension of disbelief; I haven't read the book, but I found myself really curious whether the book takes the time to justify things more. Obviously, the movie has a lot of pressure to rush to the next "big moment".

If thereโ€™s one thing Andy Weir canโ€™t be critiqued on then itโ€™s not fully justifying all of the science. I think the film on the other hand can be hard to follow for someone who has neither read the book nor has a scientific background. Itโ€™s just hard to monologue about gravitational forces and relativistic speeds on screen.

I think a lot of the pull around Omarchy is you get a riced desktop out of the box? Personally, I wouldn't really consider it for a number of reasons but I do appreciate a nice looking desktop. If you want something similarly pretty but a bit more normal and less monolithic (who needs a whole 'distro' for what Omarchy provides anyway?) approach then I'd suggest Niri + Noctalia.

Last year I wasn't feeling too good. I turned forty, waited for surgery, and was hurt by my own colleagues. So I dealt with things. Maybe not so well, but to the best of my ability. One of the consequences was that I got a bit heavy. My body changed, and I didn't feel like myself. It was a problem for future me. So now I am here with this little belly of mine. Almost back to baseline now, after a few months. trigger warning, eating disorders: I sometimes forget to log what I eat in my app of course, but what is perhaps slightly nore disturbing is the fact that I sometimes log stuff and then forget to actually eat them. Absolutely! I think separating HTML, CSS, and JS into separate files was a mistake. Web components would have succeeded far more if they had gone with the single-file component idea that so many web frameworks are converging on. I assume this is not original at all at this point - but (extreme) DRY is not a good practice. My experience is that a bit of copying yourself and your colleagues in the code base often make maintenance of the code base easier.

I think DRY should just die. It lacks any of the nuance of why copying code is a bad idea. I prefer thinking about a single source of truth and whether two pieces of code are semantically related rather than just happen to look similar. I also think identifying such similarities is hard without first seeing the repetition in a few instances and it is much better to add another copy than introduce the wrong abstraction; unless itโ€™s really obvious then just wait for more repetitions first.

My current approach is to provision a VM image and use Incus for the execution. These ALSO need to be threaded through to the development containers - they need to clone private repos.

It's tangential to the sandboxing topic, really. I started the first post with a broader intent in mind and then elaborated on the sandboxing setup I'm working on. For AI-assisted coding, though, it's nice because Haskell provides a lot of feedback earlier in the development process compared to lots of other languages. It tends to work once it compiles (obviously not all the time).

My favorite part of classic reddit was the use of elaborate hacks to circumvent the restrictions on custom subreddit CSS. E.g. animated gifs weren't allowed, so people made filmstrip sprites with stepwise animation in such a way as to look exactly the same.

I was talking about this with some alumni students, specifically their experience learning python with us a few years earlier (these are college students who are not really using python any more). What it seems to boil down to is that with python you have the feeling that there is this huge forest of solutions to any problem you are having -- but you will never know the whole forest. BASIC feels like you "know" it after a day or two of playing around, evidently.
