Haven't decided. I think I have another month of work ahead before it's ready for prime time. Will keep everyone updated by posting here.

Morning everyone, I've started a project to bring back "classic" era Instagram, from say the 2012 - 2013 time frame, long before it was ensh**ified. It's nowhere near ready for public consumption, so I've closed off registrations. Right now it's mainly for me to show my photography. halation.photos

Thanks! I'm excited about this thing. I used to love Instagram and was just crushed when started becoming what it is. Hopefully someone with no need to make money can build something that others might enjoy. Not sure many care about photos anymore though, I guess we'll see.

textlog for photos. I welcome this. I've been thinking of dumping my IG contents into a static site and nuking IG. But I haven't found a nice solution (or the mindset to move one with one available) yet.

Writing. I want to do it, very badly. I just don't want to be bad at it. You have to be bad at it in order to get good at it. But... Catch 22 isn't it?

What motivates you to do it so badly? Can you find ways to explore that while only gently experiencing the self-judgemental bits?

There's a writing exercise called "burn the internal editor" which asks you to just write without lifting your pen for 15 minutes. It punishes you a little for stopping, reviewing, judging. Also, the end result is invariably "bad". The constraints basically force it. And that can feel nice, since it's not your fault.

I think I want it because everyone says it’s the gateway to improve one’s ability to think.

That makes sense. What do you do today when you're trying to think through a difficult problem?
profilefollowOld school metallian, hobbyist developer writing things mostly in Rust…mostlyreplied to😴profilefollowI really enjoy learning, I really enjoy making. I'm learning to be less guarded.:
I bounce off it and go to some other difficult problem...which I bounce off...and so on, and so on... Eventually I fire up an LLM.

I think reading helps quite a bit, especially writing about what you’ve read, even to yourself, just so you can go through the process of having to explain something that you’re only recently familiar with. There’s something about that process that seems to be helpful, at least to me.
profilefollowOld school metallian, hobbyist developer writing things mostly in Rust…mostlyreplied toprofilefollow:
If I can't explain it back perfectly, I tend to avoid even trying. I sort of skip all the questions that come in between, because I can't answer them yet. It's an odd place, my head.

Same. The way I consume information influences how I think. Short form content makes my thinking fragmented without a clear structure. I feel that fragmented thinking won't lead to convincing writing. And I'm trying to regain some of that lost control.

Very interesting! I think something along those lines might be happening for me too. Another aspect, always cooking in the back of my mind, "if you can't explain it well, don't explain it at all."

The fear of being bad at it is the only thing holding you back. I experienced something like that with playing music with others. Perhaps you could learn to lay down your critical brain during the creation process and that good/bad isn't a useful distinction until later when you're editing your work.

Yeah, this is pretty much what I can't do. My critical brain has a lot of power. It's very evolved at this point :/

In a complete fit of insanity, I'm attempting to implement at least some of the HTTP spec, from scratch, in Rust. The aim is my own web framework, as dependency free as possible.

NIH syndrome? I am guilty of it too. I love implementing things from scratch, you learn a lot by doing so and you get to own the codebase end-to-end, so no surprises and fighting around others’ choices. It can get exhausting too though, in the end I succumb to using off-the-shelf components because my primary goals move at a higher level.
profilefollowOld school metallian, hobbyist developer writing things mostly in Rust…mostlyreplied to🤸profilefollowcreative technologist creator of textlog:
I don't see much point in trying to build software at a "higher level", like whole products and services. I'm going to go down low and train myself on the fundamentals. Hopefully in time I'll be able to contribute to the foundational bits. You're right, it does get exhausting. At some point you just want to rebuild everything, which is not possible.

At some point you just want to rebuild everythingI’ve done it, which is why if you look at my githubGitHubstagas - Overviewstagas has 462 repositories available. Follow their code on GitHub. I have 450+ repos, I wanted to own the whole stack, package managers, testing frameworks, dev servers, everything from scratch. But in the end, what I really wanted to do is build an app. I learned a ton though, not regretting the time spent, but now I’m just using what’s there, and AI, to get things done.

I'm going to go down low and train myself on the fundamentals. When I wrote an HTTP sever (albeit HTTP/1.1), I learned how primitive the HTTP protocol its magic became a skill. It is freeing understanding how things work and allows me to choose where to spend time with more intention.

You're fortunate in that you've genuinely captured something that people clearly want with textlog. No one wants another static site generator or coding harness. Ideas that resonate are pretty few and far between now.

I should have said past 4 projects went viral but the other one I did a lot of coding too, so wasn’t entirely “AI slop”. In all cases though, I made something I wanted to see. It just happened to resonate with others. Still, none of them extremely popular yet. All <500 users.
