Excited about these news! I am on Friday, going to stay for a while to work on textlog among other things. Happy because I was getting a bit depressed lately living in the mountains in Crete.

Wonderful! Maybe slightly against the design principles you follow for textlog, but may I suggest adding a possible query parameter for last post I saw to only fetch those newer? I don’t know if the id just count up, but if it does it should be possible?

You’re right, after all, it’s what the majority wants.

Default avatars are often ugly, and it is tiresome seeing default avatars everywhere. Non default avatars is something you don't control and they are often ugly too. This site is quite zen, so keep it like that.

Went for middle ground, you can upload a photo now but will only be shown in your profile page and in the @handle hovercards, not as feed avatars. Just something to personalize your space more.

Restraint is the new JS library. ;)

Already started adding JS here and there, trying to keep it progressively enhanced, so JS-disabled works up to a certain point. Let’s see how far we can go with that model. Next step would be a full frontend rewrite (though trying not to change the feel of the website) and simply making actions not having to do full page (re)loads.

Sprinkling JS without breaking the experience for JS-disabled environments offers a new kind of challenge. At least I get to do new things.

Positive so far is that the overall experience starts to feel more integrated and it will improve more.

Tried some after a long time again today. Couldn’t hold my thoughts for 15 seconds. I used to be able to and blank my mind for 5 to 10 minutes. Need to practice again, I remember how beneficial it was to my when I did it in the past.

I've heard it said that every moment you realize your mind has been wandering is a moment of clarity. So uhhh.... a moment of clarity every 15 seconds sounds pretty good :grin:

Personally, I think I found good framework/vocabulary to help with meditation in some discussion by Jiddu Krishnamurti. Here is one in which he works it out with kids There was a short, to the point lecture where he basically walks you through observing thought, which profoundly changed how I approach meditation but I can't find it for the life of me!

I'm in a similar spot. I haven't maintained a regular practice since I had kids. I can observe the absence of the benefits I got from my practice, too. I'm more reactive and less focused in general. I think that my practice gave me the tools I need to stay present with my daughters, though, so I'm grateful for having retained that.

You should see a major speed improvement (10x) when loading the feeds now as we are doing a smart in-memory prewarm in the background when the server sits idle. Drops from 1s → 100ms roughly.

Doing a crazy , instead of A/B testing I’m just randomizing the appearance and measuring each of the variant choices to see how engaging they are. Ah, there is also now a ‘randomize’ button in Account → Appearance settings!

Are you sure you want to use engagement as a measure? It is a slippery slope.

I’m just curious at this point because of all the options I’d like to see which one people like most, but we’re not going switch completely into engagement driven development like FB.

Clean Code

I had so much pointless discussions about this ... but when you say "Clean Code" , do you mean the book or the general idea that such a thing exists?

The book, but actually ideas, like tiny functions and names. Aposd is much deeper book. Hilarious read

I assume this is not original at all at this point - but (extreme) DRY is not a good practice. My experience is that a bit of copying yourself and your colleagues in the code base often make maintenance of the code base easier.

Getters and setters for everything. Certainly, if you want an object to be doing more than just getting and setting a value right now, get them in there! Planning to add functionality later without breaking code? Stop it! That should break code! If I'm consuming a library and have been using this setter method for 2 years, I don't want it to suddenly introduce brand new validation, caching, or logging behavior!

Are getters and setters on everything even considered a good practice? To me it screams junior developer who hasn’t yet fully understood encapsulation and abstraction — if you’re just exposing getters and setters as the interface then what is the class/module/etc providing beyond what a standard variable does…?

If programming is the typing of characters into a text file, it is way worse. I think the key to learning is still doing it rather than reading it. If the question is about system design I think you can, but only if you curious and it becomes a problem that needs to be solved. Asking "What do you think" is one of my favorite questions to learn at the moment.

I do think there will be what were hard earned lessons about system design, code smell, designing data structures for the hardware you're running on, concurrency golden paths, etc., which are now with agentic dev even harder to learn and internalize. But also if you have an excellent teacher in the form of an actually-good model pair programming with you always, maybe not? Maybe a pair programming AI programming tutor would be a good Zed/vscode extension. Or product.
