I'm doing experiments with short attention-span students and code. Starting with python, and, oddly, now working in BASIC. I've been on a kick lately of trying to visualize the oscillating clock, and ultimately the effectively arbitrarily complex activity of a computer processor, as modern refinements of the line shaft factory of the 19th century. Of compute as being not much more than profoundly refined "work" delivered by the electrical grid into marvelously complex machines. Does that, as a metaphor at least, feel as important to you as it has to me of late? We spend so much time in a world abstracted.

Using Linux hasn't really been fun lately, idk. Nobara, despite building on fedora breaks a lot, but overall the whole ecosystem is so damn inconsistent and fragmented. Not sure if I have gotten more sensitive to this over the years but all I want is a system that "just works" and feels good 😔

(Opinion) People don’t like generative AI because it made the {insert creativity} too easy. Saw the HN post on ‘AI music banned from top 40 chart in Australia’ and people had very strong opinions in both directions. The hot take: If you’re ok with someone’s creativity being outsourced to others, then you should be ok with AI doing the same. If “AI made this and I call it mine” is bad but “someone overseas on fivver made this and I call it mine” and it’s suddenly ok, time to self reflect.

I am trying to learn emacs for the fun of it. The tutorial is brilliant and clear. Any tips that would help me learning more things. I know all I need is practice but if you may have used it, you may know a thing or two.
