This is a very silly thing to be doing in 2026, but I finally tried some Quake 1 recently. Pretty cool, it's amazing how much it really does just end up feeling like Doom in 3D.
Since I played both Doom and Quake 2 back in the day, it does feel like I've finally bridged that gap, to where I think I understand what people mean when they talk about Romero's influence in the design.
Another thing I think it makes really clear is just how much room-over-room changes the way the game spaces feel, even if no one's actively thinking about that while they play.

Absolutely! I think separating HTML, CSS, and JS into separate files was a mistake. I assume this is not original at all at this point - but (extreme) DRY is not a good practice. My experience is that a bit of copying yourself and your colleagues in the code base often make maintenance of the code base easier.

I think DRY should just die. It lacks any of the nuance of why copying code is a bad idea. I prefer thinking about a single source of truth and whether two pieces of code are semantically related rather than just happen to look similar. I also think identifying such similarities is hard without first seeing the repetition in a few instances and it is much better to add another copy than introduce the wrong abstraction; unless itโ€™s really obvious then just wait for more repetitions first.

My favorite innovations in my own work -- and to be honest, I'd prefer to call them "discoveries" -- came from simplification. There's a beautiful moment when a stack of difficult, conflicting ideas collapse into a tighter, simpler structure.

what is a refinement? honest question - I'm restructuring our refinements now. Like having group of people discussing 5 items in an hour gives little chances any one of them will be addressed properly, unless they are trivial.
#AInotesfollow brings so many issues. It really accelerates. Not only the good parts but also the bad parts. Combine this with a product person that doesn't even know what a refinement is. I'm 41, maybe I'll study to pivot, maybe I'll get into trading. I can't handle it anymore.

Architect/lead have a pre-refinement with product to clear 80% of the obvious questions. We share an agenda, devs can ask questions async. In the refinement product presents, we design a solution draft. 15 minutes/item. This doesn't work if product is incompetent and everything is AI-slopped.

And yet, homes remain chronically under-managed. Cars have service records. Portfolios have dashboards. Homes have a junk drawer full of manuals and receipts. This leads to problems that degrade a home's value over time. Deferred maintenance snowballs from small issues to emergency repairs costing thousands. It seems I can post in Chinese. Because I don't have an ID card, I can't have a phone number, and therefore can't register a stable email address, which means I can't register on content platforms or publish content. Hotmail frequently blocks my email account because I don't have a stable IP address, so my Mastodon account can't be used long-term. I hope this is a place where I can publish content consistently.

I've been on a kick lately of trying to visualize the oscillating clock, and ultimately the effectively arbitrarily complex activity of a computer processor, as modern refinements of the line shaft factory of the 19th century.
