I loved the book and Iโ€™m always fearful when a movie script is developed and a movie produced, so my relief after I saw the movie was immense. I too feel theyโ€™ve cut-out some bits, but the main thing that a book almost always takes my breath away with is fueling my imagination. A movie would (possibly) never nail that aspect.

There were a number of things that I felt weren't explained well and broke my suspension of disbelief; I haven't read the book, but I found myself really curious whether the book takes the time to justify things more. If thereโ€™s one thing Andy Weir canโ€™t be critiqued on then itโ€™s not fully justifying all of the science. I think the film on the other hand can be hard to follow for someone who has neither read the book nor has a scientific background. The slowness is intentional. I wanted to make it look more like a user doing it than a script so it doesn't set off any alarms. I have it waiting from 1 to 3 seconds between clicks to slow it down. :-) So far so good!

I've been leaning hard on NixOS in my latest attempt at a linux desktop box and have been really enjoying it. LLMs definitely help as there's a tremendous amount of information you need to use it effectively, I feel. I also started with Hyprland but then moved to Niri and have really enjoyed it.

I was talking about this with some alumni students, specifically their experience learning python with us a few years earlier (these are college students who are not really using python any more). What it seems to boil down to is that with python you have the feeling that there is this huge forest of solutions to any problem you are having -- but you will never know the whole forest. BASIC feels like you "know" it after a day or two of playing around, evidently.

I think DRY should just die. It lacks any of the nuance of why copying code is a bad idea. I prefer thinking about a single source of truth and whether two pieces of code are semantically related rather than just happen to look similar. I also think identifying such similarities is hard without first seeing the repetition in a few instances and it is much better to add another copy than introduce the wrong abstraction; unless itโ€™s really obvious then just wait for more repetitions first.
