Already started adding JS here and there, trying to keep it progressively enhanced, so JS-disabled works up to a certain point. Letโ€™s see how far we can go with that model. Next step would be a full frontend rewrite (though trying not to change the feel of the website) and simply making actions not having to do full page (re)loads.

Microservices. Not really programming, as this is more on the architectural level. Microservices is a valid approach when you need to address massive scale. The thing is, I have seen it applied to things that could realistically serve its audience in a handful of modest servers with a less fashionable approach. It was done under the guise of simplification; each individual microservice was in fact very small. But this at the cost of absolute spaghetti architecture.

Getters and setters for everything. Certainly, if you want an object to be doing more than just getting and setting a value right now, get them in there! Planning to add functionality later without breaking code? Stop it! That should break code! If programming is the typing of characters into a text file, it is way worse. I think the key to learning is still doing it rather than reading it. If the question is about system design I think you can, but only if you curious and it becomes a problem that needs to be solved. Nothing fancy, a blue/green architecture with systemd and Caddy, and a script that swaps between the 2 instances when the new one becomes /healthy, and as an upside if the new deployment fails the old one never stops serving requests.

Yes, it uses Bunโ€™s server.stop(false) which does graceful shutdown draining old connections and stops receiving new ones in the meantime. Iโ€™m not sure what happens with those new ones that arrive after that call but before the server switch, but that happens in under a second and there is a tiny retry browsers do on 503 so it should be ok.

I thought it is a load balancer, but I guess it is not then. Load balancers are great for blue/green deployments - new instances take new jobs the moment they are running while old services stop taking new ones and wrap up any old ongoing ones. Which means you have at least one old instance and a new one running at the same time until the old one shuts down properly.

No itโ€™s just a script with systemd and Caddy I hacked together with ChatGPT. Backend is not my forte lol. Also I like to first do the low-level thing to understand it, then use abstractions. Probably going to switch to something nicer in the future but for now weโ€™re good.
I think so. Claude is very good at admin-ing k8s to the point where I can describe the deployment styling I like and use it on a per component basis. Using Claude also helped me start with my own custom resource controllers to control large swaths of my architecture as reconciliation code rather than one shotting things with terraform or cli commands.

Very interesting and cool idea! This means that tags now serve a dual purpose, which is not a bad thing. It's useful that people can follow #whispernotesfollow, but perhaps special tags (of which there is currently only one to my knowledge) will eventually need to be called out visually or otherwise #bikesheddingnotesfollow #yakshavingnotesfollow #justparticipatingnotesfollow

Another use-case for timestamps - showing how often someone posts, and how recently they were active. I want to be able to send my friends a link to my user page and say "follow me here for random thoughts". Odds are they're not going to create an account, but they might bookmark it and check for updates from time to time. Timestamps will tell them whether it's worthwhile to do this.
Why not replace them with humanized time periods: "Just now" "A little while ago" "A long time ago" etc.
profilefollowMillenial/Xenial who used to be really excited about programming.replied toprofilefollow:
Yes! I made a similar suggestion on HN, though like your labels better. I was thinking a bit more on it that after "just now" and a hypothetical "new" that the timestamp could disappear so long as there has been a response within X amount of time, for example, after 2 months. After this time period it could start saying things like, "a while ago," "quite a while ago," and "a long time ago" based on (for example) 1 years ago, 2 years ago, > 2 years ago.

Thatโ€™s what we do now. In the post pages there is approximate time with more precise hover informtaion for older posts, so there is context. Also when a post is unread it will show these approximate times so again you can tell when they were written roughly.

thanks for the pointers. I think I implemented some of those changes but I need to double check some of the new API endpoints. for now notifs aren't native to android, which makes them a bit Shakey, but the perk is there are no f-droid blockers for publishing so I'm planning that
v0.6.0 just cut, quite happy with the swipe gestures for replying, as well as some better caching / offline behavior on app cold start.
๐Ÿ”ฅ Thatโ€™s great! also, new endpoints: /feeds/latest/conversations /feeds/hot/conversations /activities/for-you/conversations /activities/to-me/conversations If u check the webapp youโ€™ll see that now conversations are threaded with recent replies revealed and posts expandable to reveal even more from that thread. These new endpoints deliver all that, so we move from strictly chronological to more โ€œrecent discussionโ€ based views. Just more work for the next versions :) lmk if you need smth

I can't really think of anything better off-hand. You could overload the # some more and just follow it with the post number but then there would be chaos if anyone wanted a fully numerical hashtag which is going to happen at some point (new year, for instance). I like that it shortens it in the rendering as it stands - that's good enough for me. :)

That works nicely. Although again you will get unintentional usage because ~ followed by a number is often used to mean approximately that number. eg: "we're expecting ~100 people". You are also using it for strikethrough formatting. Looking at my keyboard the least ambiguous/overused symbol is probably the & - but I'm not sure if that's better overall.

numbers In a past life, when I was a statistician, I often though that the primary goal of statistics was to communicate numerical ideas without actually using any numbers. Numbers make people anxious, manufacture false certainty, project false confidence. They invariably appear to say something that's related to but not quite exactly the truth. I love the experiment of just not having them. I also wonder about the experiment of: could something fuzzier, less fraught replace them?

Yes the hovercard on desktop is an <audio> element pointing to the mp3 from a shared vocaroo clip. Itโ€™s still online, just hover the link. They donโ€™t have an API but the mp3 location is deterministic and we proxy it.

For this particular problem though, I feel like if the crawlers are coming from domestic / residential IP addresses and they lack a distinctive http header or user agent, it is indistinguishable from a denial of service attack and must be treated as such.

It would require permaban on IPs which would require permalogging of IPs in order to track them, and we are currently obfuscating them before hitting the DB with daily rotating salt so an anonymous user canโ€™t be tracked. So weโ€™d have to give up privacy/security :/

But as long as people can still use the site it's OK, right? Seems like the problem is often self-inflicted, either because the site is so bloated that answering even GET-requests is burdensome, or because they're trying to monetize the data and so must block non-paying scrapers.

SQLite is embedded in the main thread same as the HTTP server. I noticed some requests dropping and because the queries have become more complex I figured it has to do with SQLite blocking for too much time. Moving it to a Worker makes the DB asynchronous and bypass this problem.
